In a small but beautiful little coffee shop at the end of a street in Springfield, Massachusetts, you’ll find a sign that reads “Springfield Coffee Shop.”
It’s not the first sign I’ve seen on the road in Springfield, but it is one of the most striking.
It says something about the area, it’s a little touristy, but, for me at least, it says something important about the people who live here.
“The Springfield Coffee shop is about two things: the history of this area and our love for coffee,” says co-owner Scott Dorsett.
“I like to think of it as an extension of our love of coffee, because it’s not just about the beans.
It’s about the community.
And if you go, you might find a coffee that is just as good as the one you are ordering.”
Dorsets shop is in the old St. Louis Post-Dispatch building, which has a long history in Springfield.
“We have had a long relationship with the paper for over 40 years,” he says.
DORSETTS COFFEE HOUSE & GROCERY & MEAT COLLABORATION In 2014, a partnership between the New York Times and the Springfield Public Library opened the first Starbucks in the country. “
So when they told us they were closing, we knew we had to get out of here.”
DORSETTS COFFEE HOUSE & GROCERY & MEAT COLLABORATION In 2014, a partnership between the New York Times and the Springfield Public Library opened the first Starbucks in the country.
The original store opened in 1963 in the city’s downtown.
“It was very unusual to see a store like this in a very small space in a historic building,” says Dorsetts owner, Scott Doresett.
He says the decision to open the cafe was influenced by a lot of factors, including the fact that coffee is a relatively new specialty.
“If you look at the coffee shops of the city of New York, they are usually very, very large,” he explains.
“You’ll see that Starbucks has a little space in the back, but the whole building is almost like a small apartment.”
So when Dorseters partner and co-founder, Scott Mays, took a closer look at a historic photo of the building, he wanted to make sure that it reflected the history.
He said it was time for a coffee house.
“When I looked at it, I knew we needed to do something special, and I decided that the most exciting part of the design would be that the building was made from reclaimed wood,” he adds.
“And that meant that we were going to use reclaimed wood for the interior and the outside of the store.”
The original St. Charles Coffee House in Springfield was a coffeehouse in the 1800s, but its interior was renovated and turned into a retail space.
Dorsetts is passionate about reclaimed wood.
“In my home, I have lots of reclaimed wood in the kitchen,” he notes.
“My wife and I do a lot on the kitchen.
We are the big people, but we can use reclaimed lumber for a lot more than just our kitchen.”
The cafe was actually opened in July of 2016.
It has a new owner, and the new owners will use the building’s historic space to serve their customers.
The new owner is hoping to open a new store by next spring, but for now, Dorseterts is focused on the coffee business.
“There are so many things I want to do here that I want the history to be part of,” he continues.
DORESETTS LOVE OF COFFE The cafe is open seven days a week. “
That’s a big part of what we love about it.”
DORESETTS LOVE OF COFFE The cafe is open seven days a week.
On Wednesdays, Doresets customers order from a menu of three coffees: the Roastero Espresso, the La Casa Espresso and the Cafe Espresso.
“Every day is like a new day for me,” says Mays.
“On Wednesdays I am happy to serve the customers.
It makes me feel a lot better that I am not going to be working in another place for the rest of my life.” “
A lot of people come in here to go for coffee, and it’s really exciting to have that type of business here.
It makes me feel a lot better that I am not going to be working in another place for the rest of my life.”
Doresetts coffee is made using espresso beans from the roastero espresso mill in the heart of downtown Springfield.
The beans are then ground into a powder, which is then mixed with coffee beans.
“What we really love about the Roasters Espresso is that it’s got the flavor of the roasted beans, but with a little more body,” he recalls.
“As you drink it, the beans are going to taste a little bit different
